English as a Second Language
ESL Contact: J. Ayotte

ESL.jpgStudents at Captain M. VandenBos P.S. whose first language is a language other than English (or a variety of English that varies from the standard English used in Ontario schools) may be eligible for support from the ESL/ELD Resource teacher, in order to gain language skills comparable to native-English speaking peers.

English language learners (ELLs) usually are recent arrivals to Canada from another country, or may have been born in Canada but speak a language other than English/French in the home.  These students may need extra time, experience and instruction.

In the Durham District School Board we value all languages in our communities, and we encourage parents to continue to use the first language in the home.  Please ask about dual-language resources available from the ESL/ELD department.

There are many things parents can do to encourage literacy in all languages:

  • Talk with your child about what they are learning in school, and translate new or unfamiliar words
  • Ask your child to label pictures of what they experience at school
  • Read books in both languages and sue reading strategies such as prediction, retelling and making connections to previous experiences

If you require an interpreter to communicate with your child's teacher, we maybe able to arrange someone for you.  Ongoing communication with parents is important to our teachers and administrators.
