STAR stands for Students and Teachers Against Racism! Don’t be fooled by STAR’s name, they are not solely committed to the abolishment of racism. STAR’s other causes include, but are not limited to, sexism, classism, homophobia, and xenophobia. STAR is a Durham-wide initiative, and often works with other schools and the school board to recognize and coordinate events for dates important to promoting universal equity.
Star’s ultimate goal is to promote equity through education and awareness. They constantly discuss social injustices in current news, and ways in which we as individuals and groups can work to stop these injustices. STAR runs several events throughout the year, including Black History Month and the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. STAR tries to have someone bring in a cool food from their culture for each meeting. New members always welcome, all you need is the desire to make a difference!
STAR meets every Wed after school in Rm 322 from 2:55-3:50PM.
Students can join by coming to a meeting at any point in the year, STAR is always looking for new members to contribute ideas and help plan events!
Mrs. Sutherland is STAR’s supervisor. You can find her in teacher workroom 324.
