ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (O.YA.P.)
This innovative joint venture between the Durham District School Board, the Durham Catholic District School Board, Durham College, Sir Sandford Fleming College, and the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities allows students to complete part of the courses needed for apprenticeship training while still attending high school.
Specific trades may include Manufacturing, Motive Power, Hairstyling, Chef/Baker, Construction and Landscaping. Only students that have an employer willing to sign them on as an apprentice will be selected. Please see the Cooperative Education Department immediately to help you start this process early!
Students apply for this program in their final year through the regular application process for Cooperative Education. Students should have some technological subject experience and passing grades in academic subjects. Final selection of candidates is made by representatives from the college involved and the Local Industry Committee based on resumes, interviews and references.
During the second semester, students attend classes at a place of learning other than Pine Ridge for 2 or 3 days a week to complete Part I of the apprenticeship training. Students attend a Cooperative Education placement in their field of interest for the other 2 or 3 days a week. Many employers in the skilled trades are excited to work with our students. The opportunities available vary on a year to year basis depending on demand and resources.
Upon completion of the course, students will have earned four high school credits, level 1 apprenticeship training and hundreds of hours logged towards their apprenticeship. Students may also find themselves being hired as an apprentice by the same employer if they are in a position to do so!
