About Durham Continuing Education
Durham Continuing Education is the Durham District School Board's location for its adult daytime program as well as many continuing education programs. In addition to daytime high school for students 21 years of age and over, Durham Continuing Education offers (see Programs area for complete descriptions):

All students in the Durham District School Board may complete a waiver allowing their work and/or projects or any visual likeness of the student to be publicly displayed or released to the media. These waivers will be made available at the beginning of each school semester.
Environmental Policy
Durham Continuing Education is an active partner with the Durham District School Board in its endeavours to protect the environment. Students are asked to use garbage and recycling containers in an appropriate fashion. Please help the teaching and custodial staffs to maintain a clean and pleasant working environment.
Evaluation and Records
Some or all of the following may be used to evaluate a student's course performance:
  • examinations
  • projects
  • presentations
  • participation
  • test results
Teachers will provide a course outline which will explain the evaluation process to be used and the method of calculation for the final mark. Other policies, such as the procedure for making up missed classes, tests or other assignments will also be explained.
Report Card
A report card briefly describes a student's courses and the marks and credits earned for each course. A student receives a report card at the end of each credit course. Report cards are available for collection from the guidance office at the E.A. Lovell site. Report cards and diplomas are not mailed out. A copy of each report card is placed in the OSR folder.
Ontario Student Record (OSR)
The OSR folder contains a student's personal educational records and is kept on file in the main office. A student may examine the contents of the OSR upon request; however, a member of the counseling staff must supervise students.
A transcript outlines the total number of high school credits that a student has successfully earned since entering high school. Transcripts are available on request from the office; there is a small fee to cover the cost of producing the document.
Field Trips
Students must sign a permission form before attending a school trip. Students may be requested to pay a nominal fee to defray costs. The school's Code of Conduct applies to all trips.
First Aid - Accidents, Fire, Winter Emergencies
If you are injured during any school activity or on school property, be sure to notify your course instructor or the secretary in the main office. A student accident report should be completed and filed within 24 hours of the incident. Accident report forms are available in the main office.
First Aid
First aid kits are located in the staff room and main office. Keep in mind the following if you have an accident:
  • Notify the teacher /office of the accident as soon as possible;
  • Complete a student accident report within 24 hours of the accident.
See Appendix A for a more thorough explanation of emergency first aid procedures.
Fire Emergencies
At the sound of the alarm, follow the exit signs posted in the room to your closest exit. Stay at least 40 feet away from the building during any emergency or drill.
Winter Snow Emergencies
The school will be open in most situations (even though some buses may be cancelled). Listen to one of the following radio stations for further information:

Each year, graduating students are invited to attend our annual graduation ceremonies. Graduation is held in late October or early November, and recognizes those students whose work and achievement have earned that student a grade 12 diploma. If you believe you will be eligible to attend this ceremony, be sure to complete a graduate application, available in guidance . Appointments for graduation photographs are made towards the end of the May - June term; check with the guidance office for dates.
Identification Tags
Student identification tags are available from the main office. These can be used to obtain student fares on buses operated by Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby or GO transit systems. All students are required to wear their identification tags daily while enrolled at Durham Continuing Education.
Learning Materials and Textbooks Deposit
Students must pay a single, refundable $100.00 CAD material deposit before registration can be finalized. This may be paid in cash or by using VISA or debit card.
Office Facilities
  • The photocopiers are for staff use only. Students may not use the office photocopiers.
  • Office telephones - Individuals may not use the office phones for school or personal business.
  • Messages - Under normal circumstances we do not accept phone messages for students. If family or friends need to contact you in an emergency, please be sure they have a list of your classes and their times. Please ask family and friends to call only when matters are of an urgent nature. To protect your privacy and ensure student safety, the office staff will not give any visitor the number of a classroom where you can be located.
Students have the privilege of parking on school grounds. Please be aware that certain areas are reserved or restricted, including the following: driveways, daycare drop-off zone, fire-routes. Please leave these areas clear at all times. Cars illegally parked may be tagged and towed at the owner's
Please note: Durham Continuing Education and the Durham District School Board cannot be responsible for theft of items left on the premises or in cars. Please safeguard your belongings at all times.
School Fundraising
Students and/or private citizens or companies may not undertake to solicit donations or sell goods at Durham Continuing Education without the consent of the principal or his designate.

Privacy Policy
The Durham District School Board respects the privacy of its web visitors. Staff adhere to strict policies that protect the confidentiality of any personal identifiable information such as names, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers.
Specifics of how the Board gathers and users Internet information are outlined below.
1. Access to the Board’s website, and use of any of its service features, typically do not require providing any personal information whatsoever.
2. "Cookie" technology captures a summary - not individual - information on visitor use patterns. This computer code tracks "traffic" to determine how effective a given page is in meeting information or service needs. Apart from providing a performance measure for the Board’s Internet site, the data is otherwise meaningless.
3. A “cookie” contains no information that personally identifies visitors to the Board’s website and is strictly geared to providing internal performance data. The Board knows nothing of an internet visitors browsing path once he or she has left
4. The only personal identifying information arising from the use of the Board’s website is what you supply to us on a voluntary basis. For example, this could be in connection with the following; submitting comments, suggestions or questions through a feedback form or an e-mail, registration for, or information required for downloading materials.
